MUSIC REVIEW: WE CAN’T STOP - MILEY CYRUS

Sounds like: That “Party in the USA” got completely out of hand…drinks, drugs and debauchery! This is what a hangover would sound like.

Disney’s White-girl Rihanna

Walt Disney is perhaps somersaulting in his grave, we’re sure it’s not with pride either. One of the youngest of the Mickey Mouse Club completely shatters her squeaky clean girl image and becomes what can be best described as the white-girl Rihanna on her latest single, We Can’t Stop.

The Rihanna comparison becomes more fitting once we realize this track was penned with the Barbadian chanteuse in mind and Cyrus has apparently done her effort best to channel the good girl gone bad persona in this, the lead single from her upcoming, fourth studio album (there’ve been so many?).

A piano peppered, electro-pop ode to teenage/young adult rebellion and the ensuing waste and carnage it can leave in its wake; We Can’t Stop, bobs along with the nonchalance and ‘Nyquil-taken-with-champagne wooziness of a California-sized hangover.

Erotic, Erratic, Foxier Miley – Twerking Teddy

It’s simply hard to imagine that only a few singles ago, this girl was giving us a candy coated account of how a humble country lass like herself ended up partying somewhere in the glitzier bits of the USA. Now she has undoubtedly mastered the art of partying and has taken it down the rabbit hole and FAST!

The bizarre accompanying video premiered on YouTube on June 19, replete with both erotic and erratic behavior on display from a young, foxier looking Miley and her friends. ‘Twerking’ teddy bear back packs? Money sandwiches? Taxidermy on parade? All the hallmarks of a less than average house party thrown by another Hollywood child star gone haywire – I’m confident this was the intention in any case.

Convincing? Unconvincing?

The track, while sonically unlike any other mainstream pop single out there right now, falls dangerously close to being, well…unconvincing? Miley’s decidedly ‘Disney’ vocals play off with less ‘snarl’ than the originally intended songstress would have executed; this is of course is no slight to Ms. Cyrus.

While the video is sure to keep tongues wagging for sometime, it remains to be seen if all of the Fenty-posing will pay off for the Disney camp’s latest teen star gone hellion, by way of earning her a coveted summer smash.
